YogaBros

Despite its popularity, there’s a large part of our population that is largely oblivious to the of the benefits of a consistent yoga practice.

Men.

Yet, of late I’ve had quite a few requests from men and partners of men to create a class that is designed with a man’s body in mind.

Dad’s with back pain, office workers who want to shed their beer gut and gym enthusiasts who want counter balance weight training are all looking to stretch and strengthen their stiff and tired bodies and to increase flexibility.

So too are those living with old sporting injuries, those wanting to prevent future injury and those who want to delay the deterioration process that comes with ageing. (Next time you strain, reaching to put on a pair of socks, ask yourself the question, are my feet somehow getting out of reach, or do I need to buy a ‘Sock Aid’? (it’s a thing).

We all seek a class that won’t embarrass the inflexible and that leaves us with the feel-good endorphin buzz. Welcome on in to YogaBros.

A man’s body has different strengths and weaknesses than a woman’s.

Men often suffer from tightness in the hips (in particular hip-flexors), hamstrings and shoulders which can lead to injury or weakness and a reduced range of motion.

A good yoga practice tones the entire body symmetrically and helps to offset physical irregularities from the sports men enjoy.  It is a full-body workout that creates both strength and flexibility and you need to have both.  It teaches you to observe what is going on in the body – and later in the mind.

Yoga improves coordination & cardiovascular health, it sharpens focus and builds immunity, enhances body flexibility and is the perfect cross training activity for other sports.

Flexibility is not a prerequisite of yoga – flexibility is developed sequentially.

A bit like sneaking the veggies in the pasta sauce, yoga also promotes a deep sense relaxation.  In breath work we learn to tame the ‘flight-or-flight’ stress response.

Taking one yoga class per week or doing a couple of pre-workout poses can increase endurance, build strength, prevent injuries and reduce the risk of heart disease.

So – get your ‘om’ on! Begin your journey and reap the benefits of a consistent yoga practice.

Join us for a 9 week Strengthen & Stretch series – designed for the male of the body.  Grab your colleagues, your mates and sons and join the mat challenge!
